Meet Capt. Ray Whitfield — thirty-two seasons on West Michigan water and still the first boat off the dock most mornings. He grew up perch fishing off a rowboat with his grandfather, ran a body shop for a decade, then sold it the year he earned his six-pack license and never looked back.
Ray reads Muskegon Lake by feel: which weed edges hold walleye after a north wind, where the perch schools stack in September, and how to put a first-timer on a fish before the coffee is gone. He is patient with kids, blunt about the weather, and famously particular about keeping the deck clean and the rods sharp.
Off the water he ties his own leaders at the kitchen table, coaches youth hockey in the winter, and swears the best sandwich in town is at a gas station he will only name once you are aboard.
